Le modèle philanthropique mulhousien initié dès 1810, puis déployé par l’élite sociale à l’origine de l’aventure industrielle de notre cité – notamment au niveau de l’assistance, de la prévoyance médicale, de l’hygiène et de l’éducation – visait prioritairement à améliorer la condition ouvrière par des initiatives, encore visibles aujourd’hui. A la fin du 19e siècle, venant en appoint des lois sociales du Reich, les philanthropes mulhousiens catholiques et protestants ont redoublé d’efforts.
