Robert Breitwieser, né à Mulhouse, était un peintre et sculpteur majeur du XXe siècle, reconnu pour son rôle clé dans le mouvement artistique alsacien.
Après des études à Mulhouse, il poursuit sa formation artistique à Stuttgart, Munich et Paris, où il établit son atelier en 1928. Influencé par Cézanne, Van Gogh et Gauguin, il se distingue par sa capacité à évoluer sans cesse dans ses techniques. Il explore diverses formes d’art : peinture à l’huile, aquarelle, gravure et sculpture.
Son œuvre est caractérisée par des paysages alsaciens, notamment de Mulhouse, mais aussi des natures mortes, des portraits et des bouquets de fleurs.
Issu d’une famille de musiciens, il tente de lier peinture et musique, ce qui donne à ses œuvres une dimension sensorielle particulière. Son art est marqué par l’influence des impressionnistes et des expressionnistes, notamment dans sa recherche de lumière et de couleur. Il voyage à travers l’Europe, notamment à Berlin, Cannes, Dresde et Genève, rapportant croquis et esquisses. Il se lie d’amitié avec le poète Nathan Katz et le compositeur Henri-Alexandre Meyer, sensible à la musicalité de sa peinture.
Breitwieser expose à de nombreuses reprises, à Paris, Strasbourg, Anvers et Kassel, et participe au Salon des Indépendants à Paris. En 1949, il publie la série de lithographies « Paysages d’Alsace ». Il continue d’exposer jusqu’en 1972, avec une rétrospective en 2006 à Mulhouse.
En plus de sa peinture, il crée des sculptures inspirées de la mythologie, comme des Néréides et des Vénus. Ces œuvres témoignent de sa maîtrise des formes et de la lumière.
Ses œuvres sont conservées dans les musées de Mulhouse, Strasbourg et Kassel. En 1978, la rue Robert Breitwieser à Mulhouse est nommée en son honneur.
