Le bâtiment des Bains municipaux fête en 2025 son centième anniversaire.
L’établissement répond à l’époque à un double impératif, celui de l’hygiène publique – peu de logements étant dotés d’une salle de bain et les bains publics existants s’avérant insuffisants en raison de l’augmentation importante de la population – et celui du développement de la natation.
Jusque-là, les Mulhousiens s’adonnent à ce sport dans les bains de plein air aménagés le long de l’Ill et au bout du Nouveau Bassin (Bains du Rhin). Il répond également à la vogue du thermalisme, qui à partir de la fin du XIXe siècle, s’est emparé de l’empire allemand, dont fait partie Mulhouse quand le projet de construction est adopté par la municipalité en 1911.
Si les travaux débutent avant la Première guerre mondiale, celle-ci les ralentit considérablement et ils ne reprendront réellement qu’en 1922.
L’architecte municipal Maurice Baumeister livre trois ans plus tard un imposant bâtiment à la façade de style néo-classique comportant un bel avant-corps central au décor élégant fait de colonnes à chapiteau ionique et de putti juchés sur des animaux aquatiques.
Si les décors intérieurs sont assez sobres, de magnifiques vitraux très colorés n’en n’ornent pas moins le hall d’entrée. Œuvre de Joseph Ehrismann, maître-verrier strasbourgeois, ils représentent guirlandes et motifs floraux.
Le 1er septembre 1925, le maire Auguste Wicky inaugure en grande pompe un établissement de bains considéré comme l’un des plus modernes de France, proposant une gamme de prestations très étendue : bains romains, bains médicinaux, baignoires et douches, deux bassins de natation (un pour les hommes et un pour les femmes) et même des bains pour les chiens !
Inscrit au titre des monuments historiques en 2008, le bâtiment qui a cessé son activité en 2023 a conservé tout son lustre d’origine.
