Ce dessin de David (1748-1825), don de Charles Steinbach en 1911 à la Société industrielle de Mulhouse, est l’une des plus belles pièces de la collection de dessins anciens et modernes constituée par cette dernière.
Il s’agit d’une esquisse préparatoire pour l’œuvre peinte du même nom exposée au Salon du Louvre en 1783, qui permit à David d’entrer à l’Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. Une œuvre importante donc, aujourd’hui conservée au musée du Louvre, illustrant un épisode de l’Iliade : le corps d’Hector, héros de Troie, pleuré par son épouse Andromaque et leur jeune fils Astyanax.
Le sujet principal de la composition n’est pourtant pas le destin tragique d’Hector, dont le corps meurtri gît au second plan, mais bien la douleur et la détresse d’Andromaque qui tenta en vain de persuader son époux de se soustraire au duel fatal face au glorieux Achille.
L’esquisse met en évidence les recherches menées par le peintre dans le processus créatif, étapes souvent méconnues, nous donnant de précieuses informations sur les modifications et ajustements (« repentirs ») intervenus au cours de l’élaboration de son œuvre. Ainsi des recherches quant à la position des jambes de l’enfant, l’artiste laissant apparaitre et matérialisant sur le papier plusieurs possibilités qui évolueront jusqu’à l’œuvre peinte finale. Elle met surtout l’accent sur la composition des personnages et la mise en scène de la douleur, perceptible dans la posture d’Andromaque. Sa main, ouverte à côté de celle d’Hector, semble lui demander par-delà la mort « pourquoi ? », alors même que son buste semble se détourner de l’insoutenable spectacle du corps aimé que la vie a quitté. Le visage, de manière magistrale, trahit le sentiment d’abandon et une détresse insondable…
