Jean Midolle, calligraphe et miniaturiste s’intéresse aux alphabets anciens et modernes, aux lettres ornées, aux styles des écritures, notamment celles du Moyen Âge. Dans cette planche, Midolle propose une interprétation à partir d’éléments architecturaux et décoratifs gothiques. Il s’émancipe des styles historiques pour laisser libre cours à son imagination, tout en usant sans retenue de motifs originaux jusqu’à parfois perdre de la lisibilité des lettres.
Le contexte de la Restauration et de la redécouverte par le romantisme des formes artistiques médiévales est parfaitement représenté par ces albums ainsi que les intérêts intellectuels du 19e siècle – hiéroglyphes égyptiens et autres écritures orientales, style romantique, etc.
Edités et diffusés par Simon Fils, ces ouvrages témoignent de la grande maîtrise du lithographe alsacien. Il n’hésite pas à user de nouvelles techniques comme la « lithochromie », procédé fondé sur l’encrage d’une surface d’impression à l’aide de plusieurs couleurs, contrairement à la chromolithographie et l’impression couleur par couleur.
